A Funny Story About Stress

A husband and wife were enjoying a leisurely Saturday morning. Cindy was a “righty” and Dan a “lefty.” Cindy gets a call Saturday morning announcing the impromptu visit of her parents.

By the end of the week, their place is usually messy.  There’s no place their guests could sit: they had laundry all over the sofa and easy chair in the living room. Beds were unmade and dishes from Cindy’s attempt at cooking a multi-course Indian meal were piled high in the sink and on the counters.

To make matters worse, their new puppy was not potty trained yet. He had left little puppy presents on the carpet and “puppy piddle” on the bathroom and kitchen floor.

In short, their apartment was an absolute disaster and Cindy’s parents would be there in 20 minutes.

They quickly got into gear.

Cindy, as a righty who sees the big picture, started tackling the most important tasks. But she got easily distracted and switched from task to task, never finishing what she started. On the way to the laundry room to dump the clothes she noticed boots that needed to be put away in her bedroom. So she quickly went there, throwing the boots and the clean clothes on the bed. She started swiping up the piddle and the “presents” from the doggie. Before she could finish that, though, she frantically moved on to the dirty kitchen.

Dan, in full-on stress mode, started dusting the figurines on the bookshelf! Twenty minutes later he was organizing her shoes in the closet. He was overfocused on these tiny details while the rest of the apartment was an absolute mess.

Needless to say, they both blew up at each other when their house was still a mess right before company came.
